Neal B. Groman papers, 1969-1985

Groman, a microbiologist at the University of Washington, talks a great deal about the changes the university underwent in the 1960s with the advent of minority issues and minority rights. Particularly, he talks of the changes after Rabbi Jacobowitz became head of Hillel and brought many Jewish issues to the attention of the university. Groman details the development of the idea for a Judaic Studies Program, and its development from a committee started by Hillel people, to an institutionalized committee within the university, to the Jewish Studies Program now in place at the university. He notes how the program came about through the diligent efforts of many faculty members, but also of a few people who perhaps have never been fully recognized for their efforts, particularly Arthur Jacobowitz.

Several University of Washington faculty members, acting for the Judaic Studies Committee of the Hillel Foundation petitioned the Arts and Sciences College to establish a Jewish Studies program. Members included Groman, Howard Kaminsky, Edward Alexander, and Leo Sreebny.
