Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Luther Landrum Boling (1861-1932) was born in Marietta, South Carolina. His father was a Captain in the 16th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry in the Civil War. Boling attended a business school in Lexington, Kentucky before taking the train to the Pacific Northwest in 1886. He lived in Yamhill, Oregon and Colville, Washington prior to settling in South Bend, Washington.

Boling worked in a variety of jobs throughout his life. In 1890, he lived on a timber claim in South Bend, which inspired the poem in this collection. He later worked in mercantile stores and owned his own store, which went bankrupt during the Panic of 1893. In 1922, he started a chicken and produce farm, which sold to local stores. He also worked as a janitor at South Bend High School.

In 1896, Boling married Myrtle Robb. They had four children: Marietta (1897-1977), Earle (1899-1903), Leroy (1906-1984), and John. John received his Ph.D. from Brown University and was later the Chair of the Biology Department at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. He did research at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the 1970s.

Myrtle Boling was placed in a mental institution in Salem, Oregon, in 1920. She died there nine years later. Luther Boling died in his home in 1932.
