Historical Note

The University of Washington's Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) Office is the only department on campus whose sole focus is to steward the undergraduate academic experience. UAA endeavors to showcase what’s possible in undergraduate education, to support efforts to evaluate and improve teaching, and to develop the systemic foundations for connecting undergraduates to the fullness of the University’s academic mission and spirit of discovery. Originally established in 1992 as the Office of Undergraduate Education, the department name was changed to Undergraduate Academic Affairs in 2006.

Programs of UAA include: Academic Transition, Advising & Success (ATAS); Center for Experiential Learning; Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL); Classroom Technology & Events; Office of Educational Assessment; Robinson Center for Young Scholars; University Honors Program; and the Office for Youth Programs Development and Support.

The Office of Undergraduate Research, previously the University of Washington Undergraduate Research Program, is a unit of UW Undergraduate Academic Affairs. The Program serves to facilitate research experiences for undergraduates with UW faculty members across disciplines. Through events such as the annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium, opportunities including the Summer Institute in the Arts & Humanities, and courses such as Research Exposed! and related workshops and resources, the Office of Undergraduate Research promotes and facilitates ways for undergraduates to participate in research with faculty. The first Undergraduate Research Symposium was held in 1998.
