Biographical Note

Professor Edward Godfrey Cox was a teacher, scholar, bibliographer, and editor born on September 19,1876. He was a professor of English at Cornell from 1907-1911 and at the University of Washington from 1911-1947 and compiled "A Reference Guide to the Literature of Travel" that chronologically presented books on travel, voyages, and expeditions. This was published by the University of Washington Press from 1934-1949. He also worked as a stream warden in Alaska and as a commercial fisherman in the Pacific off Cape Flattery. For more than forty years he traveled in the Puget Sound and British Columbia waters on “Juno”-a 35-foot power cruiser. He also was interested in all things Scottish and traveled through Scotland on foot and by bicycle; he played the pipes expertly, danced all the Highland dances, and spoke and read Gaelic. He died in 1963.
