Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Photographs taken by E.M. Messenger, likely a visitor to Alaska on a tourist excursion aboard the steamship Queen , which operated from 1882-1935. This 336-foot, iron-hulled, commercial passenger cargo steamer was originally named Queen of the Pacific , but shortened to Queen in 1890. This ship provided tourist excursions to Alaska during summer months beginning in 1890, making stops at Wrangell, Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, and other points of interest. This steamship was operated by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company. In 1891, when Messenger took the photographs from this collection, the Queen was captained by James Carroll.
