Historical NoteReturn to Top
F. Paul Baxter was a soils specialist, ecologist, and professor of soil sciences, geology, and natural resources. He was born in Redfield, South Dakota, on July 17, 1933, and raised on a farm about 15 miles west of town. He received his Bachelors of Science (1955) and his Masters of Science (1957) from South Dakota State University in soil science with minors in chemistry and economics. Baxter received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Wisconsin with emphasis on the interdisciplinary relationships of soil science, plant ecology, and geology. From 1958 to 1962 Dr. Baxter served as soils specialist and assistant professor of soil science with the University of Wyoming team at Kabul University, Afghanistan. He taught courses in soil science and geology and did research on reclamation of saline and sodic soils.
