Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Eloise Giblett was born in Tacoma, Washington, on January 17, 1921. She received B.S. (1942) and M.S. (1947) degrees from the University of Washington and worked for a short time as a clinical microbiology technician. She graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine with an M.D. in 1951 as one of five women in the School's second graduating class. She did postgraduate work in hematology at the University of Washington with Dr. Clement Finch. She joined the faculty in the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1955, and then served as a research professor from 1967 to 1987, when she retired with emeritus status. Her research helped make bone-marrow transplants successful and led to her discovery of the first recognized immunodeficiency disease. Giblett also served as head of immunogenetics (1955-1979) and then executive director (1980-1987) of the Puget Sound Blood Center. The ELO red blood cell antigen is named for her. Giblett died on September 16, 2009.
