The collection consists of a biographical sketch of George S. Watkins by an unknown author that was written about 1940 based mostly on letters written from Watkins to his family. The biography offers a picture of life in Madison County and Virginia City, Montana, between 1864 and the 1890s. There are no notes on the location of the original letters. There is a single page of explanatory notes, possibly added by Mary Elrod Ferguson, librarian at The University of Montana.
