Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Christine E. Bose was born on March 3, 1948 in New York, New York. In 1969, she earned her B.A. in mathematics from Wagner College followed by her Ph.D. in sociology from John Hopkins University in 1974. From 1973-1978, Bose served as assistant professor of sociology and women’s studies at the University of Washington. She was involved in the inception of the Women Studies program at the University of Washington and served as acting director 1975-1978. She taught at State University of New York at Albany from 1981 to 2017 when she became Professor Emerita of Sociology with joint appointments in the Departments of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Latin American, Caribbean, and US Latino Studies. She is also affiliate faculty at the University of Washington in the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies. Bose published in the areas of occupational prestige and status attainment, women’s employment as it varies by ethnicity, the social impact of household technology, women’s work at the turn of the 20th century, gender and development in Latin America, women’s global carework and migration, and global gender research.
