Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Demar Irvine was born in Modesto, California in 1908. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of California before studying abroad in Europe. When he returned to the United States, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard then started his career in teaching at the University of Washington School of Music in 1937.
During his time as a professor, he wrote several books, including “Massenet: A chronicle of His life and times” in 1994. With this book and other research, Demar Irvine was considered one of the leading experts on the life of composer Jules Massenet. He also composed orchestral works and pieces as a professor. His success in music paved his way to be the head of UW’s School of Music graduate program from 1950-1968. During this period, he also became the head of the School of Music in the 1960s. He authored a textbook called “Irvine’s Writing about Music”, and articles such as “Medical Autographs from Monteverdi to Hindemith” published in the Journal of Research in Music Education.
Demar Irvine passed away in 1995. In the honor of him and his wife, the School of Music maintains the Demar and Greta Irvine Endowed Scholarship Fund which dispenses funds to undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral students working in the School of Music. This scholarship provides funding to multiple students every year for various projects and subfields of study.
