Biographical Note

Harry Charles Weller was born in Puyallup, Washington on September 16, 1901, the son of Charles Amos and Elizabeth Weller. He graduated with a B.S. degree from Washington State University in 1923 and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1928.

Weller joined the faculty of State College of Washington in 1928 and in 1949 he was promoted to a professorship. From 1955 until his retirement in 1966, he served as chairman of the Department of Architectural Engineering. He was also a member of various organizations such as American Institute of Architects (AIA), National Educational Commission, Washington State Council Architects, Scarab, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Tau, Phi Kappa Phi and Kiwanis. As an active member of AIA, he served as Chairman of the Membership Committee, Spokane Chapter, in 1941, and Chairman of Library and Slides in 1957. During 1959-1962, he served a term as the Director of the Northwest Region of AIA

Content Description

The Weller papers contain minutes, reports, publications and correspondence relating to his professional and academic careers. Approximately fifty per cent of the materials concern his many years of participation with the American Institute of Architects. Additional materials deal with his work with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, the Engineer's Council on Professional Development, and the American Society of Engineering Education. In addition, there are records from Weller's departmental chairmanship, and some personal papers.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The papers are arranged into eleven series, reflecting Weller's original arrangement, which divided the material by professional associations. Series 1-9 generally concern professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects, the Modular Building Institute, The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and the Engineers' Council on Professional Development. The minutes, reports and correspondence of these professional activities are arranged in chronological sequence. Series 6 is concerned with Weller's participation on a campus planning committee. Series 10 deals with Weller's chairmanship of the Department of Architectural Engineering. His correspondence as a chairman is arranged in two sequences: an alphabetical subject file and a chronological file. Series 11 consists of Weller's personal papers, arranged according to subject.

Acquisition Information

The papers of Harry Charles Weller were deposited in the Washington State University Library in May, 1975, by the Department of Architecture, Washington State University.
