Historical NoteReturn to Top
Instruction in computing began in 1957 at Washington State University; this program is thus considered to be one of the oldest in the field. Computer Science became a full-fledged department in 1969 and graduates students at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels.

Arrangement
The correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other papers of the Department of Computer Science are in a single alphabetical series dating from 1962 to 1979. Most of the records date between 1974 and 1977. Of particular interest are proposals for programming and time-sharing projects for the U. S. Navy (ca. 1968- 1970), the materials on participation in the Joint Center for Graduate Study at Richland, and the record of the department's hosting of the fifth Conference on Computers in the Undergraduate Curriculum (CCUC) in 1974. One group of folders, labeled "History," were compiled by the office staff in the 1970's to document the earlier activities of the department.
Acquisition Information
The records of the Department of Computer Science were transferred to the University Archives, Washington State University, in July 1980 (UA 80-17) by the department in accordance with the approved records schedule.
Processing Note
The records were processed in September 1983 by Paul Green.
