Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Phil Preston was born in Montana on August 18, 1915. He attended high school in Great Falls, Montana, and he attended the University of Montana-Missoula from 1934 to 1939, receiving a B.S. in Forestry. After graduation Preston worked for Great Northern Railway for two years before service in Europe during World War II. When he returned, he joined his family in Ontario, Oregon, where he worked as a police officer before being hired as an engineer by the Oregon Department of Transportation. He retired in 1977.

This collection consists of Phil Preston's copy of the "Journal of the 1939 Senior Trip, School of Forestry, Montana State University (now The University of Montana-Missoula)" with extensive daily entries and photos. The trip included a visit to a CCC camp in Moscow, Idaho, and tours of the Pendleton Woolen Mills, San Francisco including the Exposition, California forests, and a Scotia, California lumber mill before the group headed into Oregon for a look at the coast, logging and dams. The collection also includes a couple of letters and Preston's Civil Service application.

Processing Note

During processing, the journal pages were removed from the original binder to limit damage due to rusted metal. The embossed front cover was kept and the original order of the pages was maintained. All photographs had detached from glued positions and were placed in mylar sleeves in the order of the captions on the photo pages.
