Historical Note

The Office of Student Affairs was organized to serve as the administrative body overseeing many facets of college life. Headed by the Dean of Students, the Office of Student Affairs includes the Associate Deans of men and Woman. By 1948, the Office had been re-organized to include additional administrative personnel, such as an Associate Dean of Students responsible for planning curricula for students who had yet to declare a major, and an Assistant Dean of Students whose duties included the development of educational, social, and cultural aspects of college residence life and to serve as an advisor to foreign students. Other officers included coordinators of student housing and veterans' affairs. The student counseling center and the placement bureau were also added to the Office of Student Affairs.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The Records of the Office of Student Affairs are arranged in one general, alphabetical subject series. This collection contains material from 1939 to 1974. The bulk of the material, however, covers the period 1949-1967. The original folder headings and the original order have been retained throughout the collection.

These records include daily correspondence and thereby reflect the many aspects and activities of the Office of Student Affairs. The collection consists of material concerning: student activities, academic affairs, student publications, the counseling center, food service, housing, honorary societies, Greek letter living groups, placement bureau, student health, student government, discipline, the operation of Compton Union Building, the YMCA/YWCA, surveys, rules and regulations pertaining to student life, co-ed dormitory integration, correspondence of principal administrators, and police relations.

Principal correspondents include President Wilson Compton and C. Clement French, Vice President E. H. Hopkins, Dean of Students J.C. Clevenger, and Dean of Women Lulu Holmes.

Acquisition Information

The records of the Office of Student Affairs were transferred to the University Archives, Washington State University, in September, 1978 (UA 78-34) in accordance with the approved records schedule.
