Historical Note

The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) has been part of Washington State University history since 1894, chartered on November 24. The association helped establish many parts of campus life like student health, employment, housing, AWSU, and was actively involved in helping to bring speakers to campus. The YMCA also helped establish and publish the Fussers’ Guide, a yearly campus phone/address directory.

The YMCA has been housed in a variety of buildings on and off campus, including above the campus post office in the old College Station building and in offices in the CUB. As of 2012, the office is located off campus, on East Main Street in downtown Pullman.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is broken into a number of subject series; some series in turn then contain several subseries. Series, subseries, and the files within each are all ordered alphabetically and then by date. Whenever possible, the original folder names were retained. Photographs and slides, as well as media (audio and video) materials have been placed in their own individual series following the subject series. Items too large to fit within these series have been placed in flat boxes at the end of the collection. Due to its size, a photographic collage is kept separately in an oversized drawer. Series 1: Correspondence Series 2: Events Series 3: Financial Series 4: Government Series 5: Historical materials Series 6: News clippings and Scrapbooks Series 7: Programs Series 8: Publicity Series 9: Students Series 10: Photographs Series 11: Audio and Video materials Series 12: Flat boxes
