Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Wasatch Mountain Club was organized in 1920 to provide an active and educational group for those who enjoyed hiking, ski touring, river running, and mountain climbing. Four albums contain photographs from the early years of the organization and include images of group members involved in winter and summer activities in the Wasatch Mountains. Locations include Brighton, Timpanogos area (including a photo of people using the first trail to the cave; Number 1161), Ensign Peak, Alta, Ogden Canyon, Mount Olympus, Mount Logan, and other locations along the Wasatch range. Most images are group photos in scenic areas in the Wasatch.

Mark Jones, Historian for the Wasatch Mountain Club, undertook the massive project of identifying, or contacting members who could identify, many of the albums. Captions updated 2022.

Photograph album of the Wasatch Mountain Club, containing photos (mostly black and white) showing scenes and activities of club activities in the early 1920s. Many of the photos were taken by Dr. William H. Hopkins, a Salt Lake dentist who was a founder of the club and promoter of outdoor recreation in Utah.
