Historical Background

In the late 19th century Matthew Dow's construction company built the Puget Sound Machinery Depot in what is now considered Seattle's SoDo district. The address was 121-139 West Massachusettes Street. The Depot worked primarily on train and ship machinery such as boilers and engines.

Content Description

These photographs include exterior and interior views of the Puget Sound Machinery Depot. Depot locations such as the Boiler Shop Building, Tile Warehouse, Bull Riveting Tower, Main Machine Shop, and outside service tracks are key subject matter. In some of these locations men are constructing boilers and engines for trains and ships or posing with them.

These photographs are organized by the location in which they were taken at the Puget Sound Machinery Depot in 1922. The locations are sorted in the following order: the Main Machine Shop, the Boiler Shop, the Machine Shop, the Bull Riveting Tower, the Tile Warehouse, sheds and service tracks.

    Typed on verso: View of our Tracks with new shed in course of construction. This picture was taken on Dec. 29th, 1922. The shed is now finished. The picture shows one G. N. Engine in front and three N.P. Engines in rear end of track dollies. Engines were stripped under our outside crane and boilers put in Boiler Shop for new fireboxes. We can accomodate six engines on this track.
