Historical Note

The Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America (the Farmers Union) was founded in Texas in 1902. Today, its membership includes farm families in 44 states who are interested in general agricultural welfare. The organization carries out educational, cooperative and legislative activities in order to represent farm families and gain for them a larger share of the national income.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The records of the Oregon-Washington Farmers Union involve only inactive local and county organizations and are divided into two series: Oregon Inactive Unions and Washington Inactive Unions. Both the Oregon and Washington groups have been divided into three subseries: Local Unions, County Unions and General File. The Local Union and County Union subseries for each state contain the same types of material: membership lists, dues payment records, correspondence, secretary's reports, and lists of officers. Dues payment records make up the bulk of the material.

The General Files, however, contain different materials. The Oregon General File includes ledger sheets, Oregon members-at-large, and correspondence. The Washingon General File contains the Farmers Union insignia, minutes of county presidents' meetings and a scrapbook on the organization. Each series is arranged alphabetically by subject.

Acquisition Information

The records of the Oregon-Washington Farmers Union were donated to the Washington State University Libraries in November of 1980 by Woodrow Wilson, Union Secretary (MS 80-47).

Bibliography

For more background information on the Farmers Union see: John A. Crampton's "The National Farmers Union" (1965) or Charles Simon Barrett's "The Mission, History and Times of the Farmers Union" (1909).
