Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Guy Potter Mormon history collection (1841-1976) contains photocopies of correspondence, statements, statistics, lists, and journal excerpts regarding the Holy Order and the performance of Second Anointings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The correspondence (1877-1921) in the collection is from early LDS prophets and leaders such as Brigham Young, John Taylor, Heber J. Grant, and Wilford Woodruff to members of the Church. The correspondence is generally in reference to questions about the Holy Order and Second Anointings. The collection also contains statements (1840s) on these subjects by LDS Church authorities such as Joseph Smith, Jr, Joseph F. Smith, and Brigham Young. These materials are either handwritten or typed copies of the original statements. A newspaper article (1976) on Spencer W. Kimball's statement on abortion is also included. The statistics and lists present in the collection refer to ordinance work done in the Manti temple from 1877 to 1902; the date, place, and remarks of Holy Order meetings from 1842 to 1844; members of the Holy Order during the 1840s; and the number of people who had received their endowments prior to the dedication of the Nauvoo temple from 1842-1844. The journal excerpts constitute the largest part of the collection and date from 1842 to 1973. These excerpts include photocopies from original diaries and typed copies of diaries taken from sources such as The Journal of Discourses and The History of the Church. Included are excerpts from the journals of Brigham Young, Joseph Smith, Jr, Wilford Woodruff, L. John Nuttall, George Q. Cannon, and others.
