Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Roland B. Dixon was born November 6, 1875 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dixon became an assistant professor for the anthropology department at Harvard University in 1897, eventually becoming an full-time professor in 1914. From 1899-1907, Dixon performed fieldwork in California and Oregon under the patronage of the American Museum of Natural History.

The collection contains correspondence and research notes regarding Dixon's expeditions to western Oregon and northern California where he gathered linguistic materials, folklore, and cultural artifacts from tribal members under the patronage of the American Museum of Natural History. Materials include notes on language forms, copies of descriptive tags sent with artifacts collected, and correspondence with Franz Boas. Glass negative prints of Klamath Billy, Klamath Charley, and Kimolly are included. A secondary focus is The Shasta, a bulletin written by Roland B. Dixon and published by the American Museum of Natural History. Photocopies of correspondence are accompanied by transcripts created by Robert Kentta in May and June 2008.
