Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Edward Everett Harpham was part of the University of Washington class of 1914 in the College of Forestry. Harpham, a veteran of World War I, was aboard the troop carrier S.S. Tuscania when it was torpedoed in 1918 by the German U-Boat UB-77 while transporting American troops to Europe. Though over 200 perished in this incident, Harpham survived and continued his work in the U.S. Army. Immediately following the war, he attended a business program at the University in Toulouse.

These papers consist of a tape recorded interview with Harpham conducted by Emmy Lou Harpham Manning as well as photographs, postcards, and a photo album documenting Harpham's time in Europe during and after WWI, newsclippings, correspondence and other materials related to the sinking of the Tuscania.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Emmy Lou Harpham Manning; summarizing article, 1976. Harpham, a veteran of World War I, describes the shipwreck of the troop carrier "Tuscania" on the coast of Scotland, his survival and recuperation. He touches on subsequent work in the U.S. Army during the rest of the war and his attendance in a business program at the University in Toulouse immediately following the war.
