Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Goodwill Games were conceived by cable television tycoon Ted Turner in 1984 as an apolitical alternative to the Olympic Games. The first Goodwill Games was held in Moscow in 1986, and the second and last in Seattle in 1990. Athletes were chosen by their respective sports federations rather than the participating nations, and the competition was world class, with a number of new records set. Though the Games ran without incident, they were a financial loss, with fewer athletes and spectators turning out than were expected.
