Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Edward Baker Scriven (1896-1970) was born in Newark, New Jersey. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia, and served in France during World War I (ca. 1917-1918). After the war ended (1918-1919) Scriven appeared in France with an entertainment troupe at RSO shows. He moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1924. He worked as a contractor in Seattle and was the vice-president of F.T. Crowe & Co. a building specialty firm. He also served as the president of the Seattle Construction Council. He became a member of the Ralston Club's Male Chorus in about 1930 and was also an active member of the Seattle Civic Opera. Scriven appeared as a baritone inMignon(Giarno, 1934),Romeo and Juliet(Benvolio, 1935),Lucia Di Lammermoor(Bide the Bent, 1937), andThe Merry Widow(Baron Popoff, 1942), as well as several others.

This part of the collection consists of 80 pages from an album with 248 photographs from WWI Europe, probably taken by Edward B. Scriven while serving there. A series of 40 numbered photographs items 1-39/1-178 were probably made by an official photographer for either the military or a newspaper.
