- The Health Sciences Center Office of Community Relations informs the University Medical Center's various constituencies of the patient care, research, and the medical education activities conducted on their behalf within the institution. Approximately one fourth of the material in this collection deals specifically with the first human implantation of a permanent artificial heart into patient Barney Clark in 1982. The rest of the records consist of correspondence, newsclippings, and news releases covering general medical center issues.

The bulk of the material in this collection was generated during the administration of John F. Dwan who was the director of the Health Sciences Center Office of Community Relations from 1978 to 2001.
The first two series in this collection are records pertaining to the first human implantation of a permanent artificial heart into Seattle dentist Dr. Barney Clark by a surgical team headed by Robert K. Jarvik and William C. DeVries on Dec. 2, 1982. This collection also contains material about Willem J. Kolff and his research and development of artificial organs. The first series is comprised of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports. The second series consists of articles and newsclippings from local newspapers, foreign publications, medical and scientific journals, as well as national publications.
The latter three series of this collections consists of general correspondence, newsclippings, and news releases from the medical center. Major topics covered in this material include AIDS, animal research, artificial organs, construction of the new medical center on the University campus, the controversey over renaming the medical school after James L. Sorenson, genetic research, the Hansen siamese twins, in-vitro fertilization, kidney dialysis, laser surgery, nursing shortages, organ transplants, the Primary Children's Medical Center, radioactivity from nuclear testing, and the University Hospital sponsored Utah Open Golf Tourney.

Arrangement
This collection is divided into the following five series: Artificial Heart Records, Artificial Heart Newsclippings, Medical Center Correspondence, Medical Center Newsclippings, and Medical Center News Releases. The first two series are arranged alphabetically, while the last three are arranged chronologically.
Separated Materials
One cubic foot of cassette tapes, photographs, and video tapes were sent to AudioVisual.
Acquisition Information
This collection came from four cubic feet of material that was picked up from Anne Brillinger at the Office of Community Realtions in the Health Sciences Center in 1991.
