Summary
Emmet W. Gulley (1894-1981) became a missionary, as well as a professor and president of Pacific College (now George Fox College), and investigated the governmental relations between the Doukhobors and the Canadian government. The collection contains correspondence, administrative papers, articles, essays, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings regarding the Doukhobors and Gulley's mediation work, and a scrapbook that contains photographs of Doukhobors.

Emmet W. Gulley (1894-1981) was born in Haviland, Kansas and educated at Pacific College and Haverford College.

He was a missionary in Mexico during 1919-1924. He took the position of superintendent of the New York Meeting of Friends from 1924-1928. He then became a professor at Pacific College (now George Fox College), 1928-1947, and then became president of the college, 1941-1947. Gulley also did relief work in Spain during 1938-1939 and worked in Cuba, 1938-1940. He also worked with the Klamath Indians.

As executive secretary for the Oregon branch of the American Friends Service Committee, he was sent to British Columbia in 1950 to investigate the governmental relations between the Doukhobors and the Canadian government. He remained in this work for six years, part of the time as a government representative.

The collection contains correspondence, administrative papers, articles, essays, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings regarding the Doukhobors and Gulley's mediation work, and a scrapbook that contains photographs of Doukhobors.

Correspondence is separated into an outgoing and incoming sections. The incoming section is arranged alphabetically by sender's last name or organizational title. Included are fourteen letters from different Doukhobor groups.

Major correspondents are: Stephen C. Cary, Fred Haslam, Lewis M. Hoskins, F. J. Mead, Levi T. Pennington.

There is also a scrapbook that contains photographs of Doukhobors. A bound copy of the report titled, "Report of the Doukhobor Research Committee, 1952" is also included.

Other material includes a copy of Gulley's autobiography, articles and essays, newspaper clippings about Doukhobors, publications, and business papers.
