Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The S. Joseph Quinney photograph collection consists of images focusing on river trips and southern Utah Scenery in the 1950s and 1960s. All images in the collection are transparencies (35mm and 2 1/4") with the bulk of them being Ektachrome or similar color format. Unfortunately the unstable color is already fading. Use of this collection in a slide projector or other extreme exposure to light is discouraged as it may decrease the life of the image. The images document river trips on the Green, Colorado, Yampa, and San Juan rivers in Utah and Arizona, and the Snake River in Idaho. They were taken by the Quinney family in the 1950s and 1960s. Also included are images of Bear Lake, and miscellaneous other outdoor images. Included in the collection is a 16mm film of a Grand Canyon river trip with Harris-Brennan River Expeditions, cica 1958. (approx. 1 hr.) This film was transferred to the Audio-Visual section of the Multimedia Archives, and converted to videotape for viewing. It is listed as A0513.

S. J. Quinney is best known as a successful attorney and one of the founders of the firm Ray, Quinney, and Nebeker; as the founder of the Alta Ski Resort; and as a philanthropist. However, he also was an avid river runner and outdoorsman, and took his family on river trips throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Most of these trips were outfitted by Harris-Brennan River Expeditions. Virtually all of the photos in P0618 document these trips. S. J. Quinney himself, because he was behind the camera, rarely appears in the photographs, but his family members are often seen.
