Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Western History Center began at the University of Utah in 1964. After an administrative review in 1970, it was reorganized into the American West Center and placed within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Center was also merged with the Bureau of Indian Services, American West Studies, and documentation and oral history projects which began in 1967 under a large grant from the Doris Duke Foundation. In the 1970's, the American West Center launched an Applied History program in conjunction with the History Department and incorporated the Intercultural and Regional Studies program which dealt with the various ethnic groups in the Intermountain West.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The material in this collection was generated through the activities of Floyd O'Neil who was the Assistant Director of the Center for the Studies of the American West from 1967 to 1971, Associate Director for the American West Center from 1972 to 1985, and Director of the American West Center from 1985 until his retirement in 1995. He was also an adjunct professor in the Department of History from 1976 from until he retired and was made Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and History. The bulk of the material covers the administrations of Directors David E. Miller (1965-1971), S. Tyler Lyman (1971-1985), and Floyd O'Neil (1986-1995). The majority of the Administrative Records were produced from consultation projects that the American West Center performed in collaboration with Native American tribes in the American West. This material also covers the program for graduate training in the history of Indians in the Americas which the Center implemented in 1976.
