A. C. Smith (1831-1911) was a pioneer resident of the Grande Ronde Valley in Oregon. Smith was born in Illinois and settled in the Grande Ronde Valley in 1862, the first to settle in the section of Wallowa county known as Cove.

The collection consists of a photostat copy of a letter from Smith to James Slater, and advertisement
In the letter, Smith describes the political climate of the Grande Ronde Valley in preparation for a coming election, and his predictions of the outcome.
Also included in the collection is a photostat copy of an advertisement for the Mountain Sentinel of Union, Oregon, a newspaper that was subtitled "Democratic in Politics, Neutral in Religion, Unfettered by Rings, [and] Fearless and Free in the discussion of all questions..."
