Historical Note
Sororia was formed in 1910 when sixteen married women students began the Married Women's Club to encourage one another in their pursuit of higher education. The name was changed to "University Dames" in 1912 to include unmarried women students over the age of 25. Subsequent name changes include: "Marilla Hutchins Club" (1920), "Sororia" (1924), "Kinesis" (ca. 1979), then "Sororia" again. The purpose of the organization was to provide a social and academic support group for these "non-traditional" students. Sororia Alumnae (1924) was formed to support Sororia and became incorporated in 1945. In 1985, the alumni group disbanded, sold its base, the Clara Wein home, and endowed a scholarship for older women students.

Arrangement
The collection is divided into the records of the Sororia Alumnae followed by the records of Sororia itself. The records are further arranged by series and listed by folder.
Acquisition Information
The records were received in five separate accessions: 3350-1 was received on September 12, 1985, from Ruth Pennock; Accession 4170-1 was received on March 31, 1992, from Judy Minks; Accession 3350-2 was received on September 14, 1985, from Ruth Pennock; Accession 3350-3 was received on February 26, 1985, from Judy Minks; the final accession, 3350-4, was received December 3, 2002, from Marie Little. All five accessions were merged in December 2002 to form a single accession, 3350-5. The Sororia pin in the realia series was received on September 9, 2005, from Carol Jo Horn and integrated into the collection in December 2005.
