Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Guy Allen Turner was born October 26, 1872 in Vermont. His parents moved to Walla Walla around 1879. After a brief residence they moved to Santa Barbara, California, returning to Walla Walla in 1887. He was a veteran of nearly two years of service in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899. After his return to Walla Walla he married Grace Johnston in 1901 and engaged in a variety of occupations, including two terms as county treasurer and two as county auditor. Around 1931 he moved to Chehalis, Washington where he worked for the Washington State Highway Department. He died April 28, 1946 in Chehalis.

The Guy Allen Turner Correspondence contains personal papers of Guy Allen Turner. The collection, which dates from 1898 to 1899, consists mainly of letters written to Ella Burrows, an acquaintance from Walla Walla during Turners service in the Spanish-American War as a member of the 1st Washington Volunteer Infantry. There is also a folder of military documents relating to his induction and discharge. The letters are descriptive of the experiences of a member of the military in the latter years of the 19th century.
