Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ray Holman was born on the island of Trinidad in 1944. He began playing pan as a young boy with the Invaders Steel Drum Orchestra. After a few years, he started arranging for the band, and went on to arrange for groups such as Starlift, Pandemonium, Exodus, Antillian All Stars, Carib Tokyo, and Phase II Pan Groove. As a teenager attending Queens Royal College, he was involved with the first attempts to use pan in a jazz setting. His original compositions have been released regularly for the Trinidad Carnival season. Holman is one of the most respected arrangers of steel band music in the world, and in 1998-99 he was a visiting artist in the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of Washington, School of Music
