Historical NoteReturn to Top

Grover Loening was born in Germany in 1888. Loening saw his first airplane in 1908, and was a student of Orville Wright. He was a graduate of the first class to receive an aeronautical engineering degree from Columbia University. He started is own company, Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation, and later funded Grover Loening Aircraft Company. Loening invented the "Flying Yacht," a monoplane boat which won the Collier Trophy in 1921. He received numerous medals for his aeronautics work, including the Air Force Medal in 1955 and the Guggenhim Medal in 1960, and he was admitted to the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1969. Loening died in 1976.
