Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Münir Nurettin Beken (1964-) is a musician, conductor, and teacher from Istanbul, Turkey. He studied oud under Mutlu Torun at the State Conservatory of Istanbul from age 11. After graduating in 1986, he conducted the Conservatory Orchestra and created recording for the Turkish state radio and television network. He earned his Masters in 1988 from the State Conservatory of Turkish Classical Music and his PhD in ethnomusicology in 1988 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is currently an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
