Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frederick Morgan Padelford was born in New England in 1875, son of a Baptist minister. Frederick attended Colby College, Waterville, Maine. He received a B.A. from Colby in 1896, a M.A. in 1899, a Ph.D. from Yale in 1899, and an LL.D from Mills in 1936. After completing his studies at Yale he was professor of English at the University of Idaho in 1899-1901. He then became professor of English at the University of Washington, Dean of the Graduate School since 1920, Assistant Dean of Faculties, 1927-1931, and assistant vice president, 1931-1932. He was a trustee of the Seattle Public Library 1906-1913, vice president of the American Shakespeare Society since 1928, president of the Seattle Art Institute since 1933. Dr. Padelford was an English scholar of note, recognized for his scholarly achievements and human qualities. His research into the writings of Edmund Spenser gave him recognition as the outstanding authority on the writer in the English speaking world. He had considerable power in helping to shape the growth of the University. He died in 1942 while on his way to give the Presidential address to the Modern Language Association. Mrs. F.M. Padelford (Jessie Elizabeth Pepper) was born 1874, died 1967. Eunice Clise (Eunice Padelford), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Padelford, was born 1907.

Scope and Content: Sketch and photographs.

Accession consists of a sketch of the Padelford cabin near Kingston used as part of the University Outing Club, as well as two photographs taken on the porch. The first shows Philip Padelford as a child and the second shows Adonirum Judson Padelford (father of Frederick Morgan Padelford). An additional photograph is a faculty group picture. All images date from about 1914.
