Richard Joe Hale was born in Missoula, Montana to Patrick and Ellen Hale in March 1897. He married Lelia E. Paxson of Butte, Montana in May 1921. They would have one son, Richard J. Hale Jr (nicknamed Dickie Joe). Hale lived and worked in Missoula as a county surveyor. Richard J. Hale died on February 8, 1960.

This collection contains 24 16mm films. The majority of the films are home movies from the Hale family, including shots of baby Richard Hale Jr., vacations in the Northwest, and scenic shots from around the Missoula area. The majority of the film is in color with no sound.
