Biographical Note

Joseph M. Flora was a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and biographer of Vardis Fisher. In addition to his work with Fisher and western writers, Professor Flora has sat on the editorial boards of Studies in Short Fiction, The Southern Literary Journal, The Thomas Wolfe Review, and The Hemingway Review. He has served as president of The Western Literature Association, The Thomas Wolfe Society, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and the South Atlantic Association of Departments of English.

Approximately 50 letters (1961-1968) to Flora from Vardis Fisher on personal, biographical, literary, and political topics, beginning in 1961 when Flora was writing his Ph.D. dissertation on Fisher and continuing until Fisher's death; together with letters to Flora from Fisher's widow Opal Fisher and other scholars and critics of Fisher's work; and Flora's writings and research files on Fisher and authors related to Fisher.
