Biographical Note

Dr. Anthony Mattina was an Italian-American linguist whose work focused on documentation and preservation of the Nselxcin language, spoken by the Okanogan, Methow, Nespelem, San Poil, Lakes, and Colville peoples of the Colville Confederated Tribes. Mattina taught and served in other capacities at the University of Montana for 36 years. He started his linguistic work with Nselxcin in the 1960s, recording and transcribing conversations and interviews with fluent elders. He helped establish a phonetic alphabet for the language, and wrote and co-wrote the Colville/Okanogan Dictionary, The Seymour Glossary, The Golden Woman, The Complete Seymour, [Madeline] Desautel Text and Dora Desautel Text, and multiple grammatical lesson plans and handbooks of the Okanogan language. Additionally, he helped start the Colville Confederated Tribes Language Program in 1995. From a plaque presented to Mattina in 2018 by the Language Program: "The impact of Dr. Mattina's work is unfathomable, and his work will continue to have a significant impact on tribal members and descendants for generations to come."
