Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Jared Fox (1805-1865) was a miller in Delton, Wisconsin. In April 1852, he began his emigration to the Oregon Territory, abandoning his wife and five children. He was unable to make a successful living in Oregon, however, and in 1853 went to California. The following year, Fox made his way back to Wisconsin by way of a steamship to New York.
Clarence Carpenter ("C. C.") Bennett (1856-1935) was the husband of Jared Fox's granddaughter Lillie A. Bennett.
Ann Brower Stahl is a professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The collection consists of a handwritten transcript of Jared Fox's diary, titled "Jared Fox's Memorandam Kept from Delton, Sauk County Wisconsin towards California and Oregon 1852-1854." The transcription is incomplete, only covering entries made between April 1852 and April 1853. These entries describe Fox's journey to and his time in the Oregon Territory. The collection also includes a list of corrections to be made to the transcript; reproductions of C. C. Bennett's correspondence; and a five-page note, dated 2019, by Professor Ann Stahl, explaining why she believes the transcript was made by C. C. Bennett over a period of time from the late 1870s to the 1920s.
