Historical Note
Sadakichi Hartmann (1867-1944) was born in Nagasaki, Japan, and was a writer, playwright, poet, actor, artist, art critic, and Bohemian of Greenwich Village and California. Hartmann's mother was Japanese and his father, Carl Hermann Oscar Hartmann, was a multi-lingual German citizen. Hartmann attended private schools in Hamburg and Kiel, Germany and studied theater, art, and literature in Berlin, Brussels, and Paris. He was a writer for several Boston and New York City newspapers in the 1880s and 1890s and became an American citizen in 1892. Many of his works advocate for the recognition of avant-garde art and artists.
