Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of radiation oncology and biomedical informatics.

Ira Joseph Kalet was born on April 27, 1944 in Stamford, Connecticut. Kalet received his A.B. in physics from Cornell University in 1965 and followed this with a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Princeton University in 1968. He was a research associate in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington from 1968-1969 and then taught mathematics and physics at Sonoma State College and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1978 he joined the faculty of the University of Washington in the newly formed Department of Radiation Oncology and embarked on an academic career in medical physics. Subsequently he held adjunct appointments in Computer Science & Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biological Structure, and a joint appointment in Medical Education (now the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education). From 2005 until his retirement in 2011, Kalet also served as Director of Security and Networking for UW Medicine IT Services. Kalet's research interests included simulation systems for design of radiation treatment for cancer, software development methodology, and artificial intelligence applications to medicine, particularly expert systems, ontologies and modeling. Ira Kalet died on February 21, 2015.
