Biographical NoteReturn to Top
William Hampton Marshall was born on April 20, 1912, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His family soon moved to Berkeley, California, where he graduated from high school in 1929 and eventually earned a B.S. in biology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1933. In 1935, Marshall received a master’s degree in forestry from the University of Michigan. He then moved to Brigham City, Utah, where he was a junior biologist for the United States Biological Survey, studying geese on the Bear River Refuge and Sharp-tailed Grouse in Cache Valley from 1936 to 1938. After a stint in Idaho, Marshall moved back east to earn a doctorate in forestry from the University of Michigan. He spent the remainder of his career as a professor of wildlife management and ecology at the University of Minnesota. Marshall, who is credited as one of the first researchers to band and track wildlife using radio transmitters, retired in 1978 and died in Clarkston, Washington, on January 17, 1996. William was preceded in death by his wife, Leith, a Logan native who passed away in 1991. They are both buried in the Logan City Cemetery.
