Postcard of a drawing,The Evolution of a Sourdough, showing the physical evolution of a typical Alaska Gold Rush miner over a 12 month period. The drawing depicts a man at arrival in the Klondike in suit and tie, then 2 months later with a beard, four months later with long hair, six months later with longer beard and hair, nine months later with hair and beard obscuring most of his face, and twelve months later as a pot of sourdough.
During the California Gold Rush of 1848-1855, French bakers brought sourdough breadmaking techniques to Northern California. This sourdough tradition was carried into Alaska and the western Canadian territories during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, where experienced miners and other settlers frequently carried a pouch of sourdough "starter" either around their neck or on a belt. Old hands came to be called "sourdoughs", a term that is still applied to any Alaskan old-timer.

The Territorial Courthouse
Built between 1900 and 1901, the Courthouse is closely associated with the establishment of a federal presence in the Northwest and the exercise of Canadian sovereignty. The Courthouse is one of two remaining examples of early territorial courthouses in Western Canada built by the federal government. Valued for its very good aesthetics and its good functional design, the Courthouse is an excellent and rare example of a turn-of-the-century courthouse executed in wood. It is also one of the best examples of the work of architect Thomas Fuller prior to his becoming Chief Architect of the Department of Public Works.

Bird's-eye view of Dawson, with the Moosehide Slide on the left
The landslide at the center of Dawson is called Ëddhä̀dä̀dhëchą in Hän (Han Hwëch'in), meaning a "weathered moosehide hanging", which provides the English translation "moosehide". Not caused due to mining activity, the landslide has featured prominently in the lifeways of people of Tr'ochëk, a historical Hwëch'in community which laid across from modern-day Dawson, and in the people of the Tr'ondëk (Klondike) at large, since time immemorial.
