Historical NoteReturn to Top
Hapgood and Company were Northwest salmon packers and shippers, and were successors to Hapgood, Hume and Company.
The Northwest salmon-canning industry got its start in 1866, when Hapgood, Hume and Company built a cannery on the Columbia River at Eagle Cliff, on the Washington side. This was two years after the company had built the first cannery on the West Coast on the Sacramento River.
Hapgood and Hume marketed their fish to the eastern United States, Britain, and Australia under the labels Crown, Globe, Royal, and Oregon.
In 1872, facing a labor shortage, George Hume hired Chinese workers to work in his Columbia River cannery.
