Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery opened its doors in 1927 as Washington's first public art museum. The original building, designed by renowned Seattle architect Carl Gould, is a brick structure in the collegiate Gothic style. By the 1990s, the Henry's collections were too numerous for its 5,000 square feet of exhibit space. The subsequent expansion, designed by architect Charles Gwathmey, more than quadrupled the total square footage of the museum (from 10,000 to 48,000 square feet) and included such features as a 154-seat auditiorium, bookstore, café, renovated gallery space, classrooms, and studio space.
