Summary
Carol Lindeman served as the Dean of Oregon Health & Science University's School of Nursing from 1976 to 1995. She was a prolific writer, researcher, and advocate for the nursing profession. Serving as Dean, she oversaw immense changes in the School of Nursing. These included adapting to statewide requirements for those studying, including providing additional educational opportunities and facilities for distance learners in rural areas. In addition to her work at OHSU, she took part in numerous research committees, including those for the American Nurses Association, and spoke at events on issues related to research and applying those findings to the nursing profession. This collection highlights many of her speeches and essays produced during her tenure at OHSU, some of which are recorded, as well as providing additional insight through personal correspondence and photographs.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Wisconsin on January 16, 1935, Carol Lindeman concentrated her scholarly pursuits around nursing and educational psychology, earning her Ph.D. in 1964. Her enthusiasm for research and teaching, particularly with patient recovery and innovations in the field, propelled her to the position of Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center (now Oregon Health & Science Univresity) in 1976.

In this capacity, she worked to improve the learning experience for nursing students in rural areas. This culminated in the establishment of the satellite undergraduate nursing program at what is now Eastern Oregon University, which grew to include master's and doctoral programs. Later, and with much effort, other programs were established in what is now Southern Oregon University and Oregon Institute of Technology, creating a statewide network to support the curriculum.

Much of Lindeman's work focused on innovations occurring within nursing, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, and the necessary adaptations practitioners were bound to face during their careers. She also focused on the importance of research and applying the knowledge from researchers both in teaching and in medical practice.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection contains materials written by Carol Lindeman for presentations, commencement speeches, research essays, and nursing reports. These records contain final copies, drafts, correspondence regarding the written material (particularly if it were being submitted for publication), and some handwritten notes. There are also items written about Lindeman and her contributions to the nursing profession. Additionally, there are some more personal items in the collection, including photographs, correspondence, ephemera, and material related to Lindeman's retirement in 1995. Contemporary students and those with an interest in the history of nursing may find substantive information in these records.

The "Authored works" series, dating from 1964 to 2002, includes text written solely by Lindeman as well as co-authored material with other researchers, drafts, essays, speeches, and related material that includes correspondence and notes. Not all the items are clearly identified as essays written with the intent of publication, nor are scripts for presentations. Therefore, written text that does not appear to be associated with specific societal work, like for the American Nursing Association, is included in this series.

Texts that are more clearly associated with organizations or societies, as well as publications related to the nursing profession that may or may not be written by Lindeman, are included in the second series, "Professional service work." This series dates from 1928 to 2000.

The third and final series, dating from 1939 to 2005, is "Personal and biographical." This series includes various photographs, personal correspondence and ephemera, and material related to Lindeman's retirement.

The folders for each series are arranged alphabetically.
