Historical NoteReturn to Top

The American Association of University Women's Logan chapter started to partner with the Cache Valley and Logan school districts in 1939 to provide at least one programmed event for school-aged children a year, using the Capitol Theatre as their venue. It is unclear if this program continued after 1957.

The committee assigned to the task was called the “Junior Program” committee. Members and leaders of the Junior Program committee included: Mrs. Stillman Wright, Nedra Mazuram, Marjorie Bennion, Ruth Simpson, Hazel Adams, Mrs. David Burgoyne, L.A. Stoddard, and Edith Bowen.

The programming included performances of dance dramas, children's theatre, plays, operas, ballets, and piano concerts all geared towards children. The majority of the events were performed by the Edwin Strawbridge Production company, but other performing companies included: Clare Tree Major's Children Theatre, Intermountain Theatres (BYU), University of Utah Children's Theatre, and Hazel Griggs, a concert pianist.

The Edwin Strawbridge Production Company put on most of the performances from 1940-1957. The company was founded by Edwin Strawbridge, who was a choreographer and performer on Broadway from 1918-1935. He performed in productions such as "Fools Rush In", "Pan and the Young Shepherd", and "The Importance of Being Earnest". Many newspaper and program articles stated that Mr. Strawbridge saw a need for quality children's theatre, created his performance company in New York City, and traveled around the country performing shows like "Simple Simon", "Robinson Crusoe", and "Pecos Bill".
