Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Black Diamond Press Records contain research, notes, and manuscripts relating to four books and one article published by Glenn Barrett: "Idaho Banking, 1863-1976," "Small Town Banking in the Good Ol' Days," "The First Bank of Troy," "Idaho Bank and Trust: A History," and "Banks, Bankers, and Bank Robbers." There is also additional research on banking and other topics compiled by Barrett including Idaho governors, J.R. Simplot, John M. Bernhisel, Lorenzo Snow, Weldon Brinton Heyburn, and Lem York.
Included in this collection are many newspapers and publications that Barrett acquired in his study. An example is 20 years of "Branch Clearings," the First Security staff publication, and many special edition newspapers.
Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Black Diamond History Records is a collection of research notes, manuscripts, and other documents concerned with the publishing efforts of Dr. Gwynn Barrett (writing under the name of Glenn Barrett). Under the Black Diamond Press name, Barrett published several works concerned with the coal industry, the bank industry, and spinoffs of these two areas. These include studies of the First Bank of Troy, an overview of Idaho banking, a social history of small town banking, coal miner H.F. Samuels, coal town Kemmerer, Wyoming, and printer Lem York. Also part of the Black Diamond Press was the editing of John C. Anderson's journal, an account of a man who made a trek to the Intermountain Region in the mid-19th century.
Originally, Barrett began involvement in these areas after working with Dr. Leonard Arrington while he was at Utah State University on a history of the First Security Corporation. The Black Diamond Press was not intended to be a major publishing endeavor but rather a scholar's attempt to publish his own work.
