Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Richard Alan Waterman was a noted American ethnomusicologist and anthropologist. He taught at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL from 1943-1956. Additionally, he was a visiting professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA in 1953 and 1954. He continued to teach at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI until 1968 and then at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL.

Waterman's main areas of interest included jazz music and jazz musicians, as well as studies into the music of Cuba, West Africa, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, and Brazil.
