This collection consists of notes about the origins of geographical place names given to locations (including creeks, gulches, springs, mountains, mountain ranges, canyons, buttes and other geological features) within the following national forests in Idaho and Montana: Absaroka National Forest (Absaroka Wilderness Area, Gallatin National Forest), Beaverhead National Forest, Bitterroot National Forest, Cabinet National Forest (Cabinet Wilderness Area, Kootenai National Forest, Lolo National Forest and Kaniksu National Forest), Clearwater National Forest, Custer National Forest, Deerlodge National Forest, Flathead National Forest, Gallatin National Forest, Helena National Forest, Kaniksu National Forest, Kootenai National Forest, Lewis and Clark National Forest, Nezperce National Forest (Nez Perce National Forest), and St. Joe National Forest.

A notation on the documents indates these notes were copies from cards held by each Forest in 1942.
