Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1931, Rabbi Arthur Jacobovitz was educated at Lubavicher Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York, and received his Semikha (rabbinic ordination) from Yeshiva University in New York in 1955. He served as a chaplain in the United States Air Force for two years. After his military service, he then served as Executive Director of B'nai B'rith Hillel at University of Washington from 1959-1989, staying actively involved as Executive Director Emeritus for two more decades. Known to many as “Rabbi J,” he also taught at Seattle University as a professor of Jewish Studies for 32 years.

Scope and Content: Contains Rabbi Jacobovitz's correspondence during his time as Director of B'nai B'rith Hillel at University of Washington. Also includes correspondence from his activities at Seattle University as well as his students' diaries from a 1971 Theology course class project during which students "converted" to Judaism for two weeks and journaled their experiences. Also includes photocopies of a scrapbook commemorating Jacobovitz's life and work.
